Most gear mistakes happen on race morning, not on the road. A new shoe that rubs, a bottle that is empty at the halfway mark, a jacket left in the car. The fix is simple: one checklist you build once and reuse for every ride, run and trek. Here is a practical one for athletes in India, with a short list for each sport.
The five things every athlete should carry
Whatever you are doing, start with these. They weigh almost nothing and solve most problems.
- Water, and a plan to refill it. Know where the next refill point is before you start, not when the bottle is empty.
- Something to eat. A snack you have already tried in training. Race day is not the day to test a new one.
- Sun protection. A cap or visor, sunglasses and sunscreen, even on a cloudy morning.
- Your phone, charged, with your emergency contact saved. Carry it in a pocket or a small pouch you can reach without stopping.
- Your registration details. Keep your confirmation, bib collection slip and an ID in one place, for example in the same pouch.
Running checklist
Running needs the least kit, so small details matter more.
- Shoes you have already run in. Wear them for a few runs before the event so any rub shows up early. Our guide on how to choose and when to replace running shoes explains what to look for.
- Socks that suit the weather. Avoid brand new socks on race day.
- Clothing for the start, not the finish. Early mornings can be cool and you will warm up fast. A throwaway layer you can drop at the start works well.
- A small waist belt or pocket for gels, keys and your phone, so nothing bounces.
- Anti-chafe balm for the places you know you need it.
Cycling checklist
A ride adds a machine to look after, so check the bike as carefully as you check yourself.
- A helmet that fits and is in good condition. This is not optional.
- Front and rear lights if there is any chance you will ride in low light, including a dawn start.
- A puncture kit. Spare tube or repair kit, tyre levers and a pump or inflator, and know how to use them. Practise once at home.
- Two bottles, or one bottle and a hydration pack, and food you can eat on the move.
- A quick bike check the day before: tyre pressure, brakes, chain and quick releases.
- Gloves and padded shorts for longer rides, so comfort does not end your day early.
Trekking checklist
On a trek you carry everything you need for the whole day, and sometimes more than you planned. Weather in the hills can change quickly, so pack for that.
- Trekking shoes with good grip, worn in beforehand. Blisters are the most common reason people turn back.
- Layers. A light base layer, a warm layer and a rain jacket or poncho. Even in summer it can be cold at height.
- A headlamp or torch with spare batteries, in case the day runs longer than planned.
- A basic first aid kit, including plasters and any personal medicine you use.
- Enough water and food for the full day, plus a little extra.
- A day pack that fits well. Adjust the straps so the weight sits on your hips, not your shoulders.
- Trekking poles if you like them, especially for long descents.
Pack the night before
Lay everything out the evening before and tick it off. Pack your bag in the order you will need things, with snacks and your phone on top. Charge your phone, lights and any watch. Set out what you will wear so there is nothing to decide in the morning.
If you are travelling for an event, add your bib collection details, directions to the start and a plan for getting home.
A quick word on safety
This is general guidance, not medical advice. If you are new to an activity, have a health condition, or are planning a big jump in distance or altitude, speak to a doctor first. Listen to your body, and turn back if the weather or your condition says so. There is always another event.
