The monsoon is leaving, mornings are getting cooler, and the Indian endurance season is starting. From October to December, big-city half marathons, trail races, multi-day cycling tours and river-side marathons happen almost every weekend.
If you have been saying "next season" for a while, this is it. Here are four events across India, from first-timer friendly to properly tough, plus one January race you need to plan for now. Every date comes from the organiser's own website or announcement.
Why this season matters
Most of India's best road races fall between October and February, because it is the only stretch when temperatures and humidity allow fast, safe running and riding. A race in October to December gives you a goal to train for through the best weather of the year. It can also give you a timing certificate, which several bigger races ask for before they accept your entry.
The calendar
1. Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon
One of the country's biggest half marathons, with elite international runners on the same roads as first-timers. The Great Delhi Run is a good non-competitive option if you want the atmosphere without the pressure of a 21K.
Good for: road runners chasing a 21K personal best, and first-timers who want a big-event experience.
2. Tour of Nilgiris (TFN)
A week-long cycling tour through the hills of South India. It is a tour, not a race, but seven days of climbing make it a real endurance test. Registrations are open on the official website.
Good for: cyclists with solid base mileage who want a bucket-list week on the bike.
3. SKF Goa River Marathon
A large, festival-style race in Goa, and a good excuse to plan a December weekend by the water. Check the official website for this year's distances and cut-off times before you register.
Good for: runners who want a race and a short holiday on the same weekend.
4. Tata Steel World 25K Kolkata
The organisers describe it as the world's first World Athletics Gold Label 25K. The distance sits between a half and a full marathon, so it is a good next step for runners working towards their first 42K.
Good for: half-marathon runners ready to go further without going all the way to 42K yet.
Plan ahead: Tata Mumbai Marathon 2027
Entry to the full marathon requires a timing certificate from an earlier race, and a faster, more recent certificate gets you a better start wave. Registration closes before most of the races above take place, so if you want to run Mumbai in January, register now with the certificate you already have.
Good for: anyone who wants to run India's biggest marathon and needs to qualify.
Every finish line starts with one decision: signing up. Don't wait to feel ready. Pick one race this season that scares you a little, train for it honestly, and show up on the day. The kilometres will take care of the rest.Amit Daga, Founder and CEO, Feet and Pedals®
How to pick your race
New to racing? Choose a 5K or 10K category at a big event like Delhi or Kolkata. The crowd and the organisation make your first race easier.
Already running 10K comfortably? Give yourself at least 10 to 12 weeks to build up for a half marathon. That points to a December date.
Want something different? Swap your running shoes for a saddle at the Tour of Nilgiris.
If you are planning a big jump in training, check with your doctor first. Whatever you pick, always confirm the date, categories and cut-off times on the official event website before you book travel. Organisers do sometimes change schedules.
