How to Fill Your Race: 6 Things Runners Check First

How to Fill Your Race: 6 Things Runners Check First

Most events don't struggle to fill because of the route or the date. They struggle because a runner or rider lands on the page, can't find one answer quickly, and leaves. The fix is usually simple: put the right information in the right place, open early, and make booking take a couple of minutes.

This is a practical guide for race directors, running clubs and cycling groups across India. It covers the six things athletes look for before they pay, and how to set each one up on Feet and Pedals®.

1. The essentials, on one screen

Before anything else, an athlete wants to know five things: when, where, what distance, what time it starts, and what it costs. If they have to scroll through a long story to find the start time, many won't bother.

Put these at the top of your event page:

  • Date and start time for each category (not just "morning")
  • Venue with a clear location, so it shows up in "near me" searches
  • Every category with its distance, cut-off time and age limits
  • Ticket price for each category, and the last date to register

Keep the story of your event, your route and your cause further down. It matters, but it isn't what gets someone to click "book".

2. A price that explains itself

Athletes don't mind paying for a well-run event. What they dislike is surprise: a fee that appears at checkout, or a kit that turns out to be just a bib.

  • Say what the ticket includes. Bib, timing chip, T-shirt, medal, hydration, breakfast, photos. List it plainly.
  • Be clear on your refund and transfer rules before people pay, not after they ask.
  • Offer a proper invoice. Many working professionals and corporate teams need one. On Feet and Pedals®, bookings come with invoices, and organisers get GST invoicing in their panel.

3. Open early and give people a deadline

Serious athletes plan their season months ahead. The October to February window is when most Indian road races happen, so runners are choosing their events right now. If your registration isn't open, you are not in the running for their calendar.

Once you are open, give people a reason to act now rather than "later":

  • An early price that ends on a fixed date
  • Group or club discounts, so one keen runner brings five friends
  • A clear closing date, and an honest "limited slots" line only if slots really are limited

You can create coupons in the Feet and Pedals® organiser panel for early pricing, clubs and partners, so you don't have to manage separate price lists by hand.

4. Proof that the event is worth it

A first-time athlete is taking a chance on you. Reduce the risk for them:

  • Timing and certificates. Several bigger races ask for a timing certificate from an earlier event before they accept an entry. If your race is timed, say so clearly. For many runners, that alone is a reason to sign up.
  • Photos from past editions. Real photos of your start line, route and finishers beat any design.
  • Safety details. Water stations, medical support and marshals. Parents, beginners and women running alone look for this first.
Organisers put months into the route, the permissions and the race-day plan, and then lose runners in the last two minutes, at a confusing page or a slow checkout. Our job is to make that last step easy, so your hard work actually reaches the start line.

5. Booking in minutes, check-in in seconds

The last two things athletes judge you on are the booking and the morning of the race.

Booking: athletes on Feet and Pedals® can sign in with Google, Facebook or a one-time code sent by email, pay online, and get an e-ticket with a QR code straight away. Fewer steps means fewer people dropping off halfway.

Race day: volunteers can check in participants from their QR tickets, which keeps queues at bib collection short. After the event, payouts and refunds are handled from the same organiser panel.

6. The Early Bird offer for organisers

We are building an early organiser network for Feet and Pedals®, as the first step in a larger platform for India's endurance athletes. To make it easy to try, we have an Early Bird offer for the first 25 organisers or until 31 October 2026, whichever comes first:

  • A 90-day trial, starting the day you activate the Trial Plan
  • Up to 10 event listings
  • ₹0 subscription charges during the trial
  • ₹0 payment gateway charges
  • Just 1% management fee on paid tickets, and 0% on free events

The offer is the same for everyone and is subject to offer terms. See the full pricing, and the organiser manual for a step-by-step guide to listing your first event. Questions? Write to amit@feetandpedals.com or WhatsApp +91 92207 22803.
