First Half Marathon: Pick Your Race and Start This Week

If you want to run your first half marathon this season, the honest answer is: pick a race now and start training this week. A 21K needs roughly three months of steady build-up for most new runners, and the best-weather races of early 2027 are only 12 to 17 weeks away.

This guide gives you a simple way to choose your race, two well-run January and February events to aim for, and a plain training shape you can follow. Every event detail below comes from the organiser's own website.

Why 21K is a great first big goal

A half marathon is long enough to feel like a real achievement, but short enough that a regular person with a job and a family can prepare for it safely. You don't need to run every day. Most beginner plans use three or four runs a week.

It is also the distance that opens doors. Many bigger races ask for a recent timing certificate from an earlier event before they accept your entry for longer categories. A timed half marathon on a measured course gives you that proof, and a time to beat next season.

Count back from race day

The simplest way to choose a race is to count the weeks between today and race day.

12 weeks or more: enough for most people who can already run 5K without stopping.

16 weeks or more: better if you are starting from walk-run, coming back after a break, or want extra time for slow, steady progress.

Less than 10 weeks: choose the 10K category this time and make the half marathon your next goal.

From the first week of October, a race in the first week of January gives you about 12 weeks. A race in the first week of February gives you about 17. That is why the two events below work so well for first-timers.

Two races to aim for

1. Freshworks Chennai Marathon 2027

📅 Sun, 3 January 2027 · 📍 Chennai · 🏃 10K, Half Marathon, Twenty Miler (32.186 km), Full Marathon

The 15th edition, organised by Chennai Runners, on a course the organisers say is AIMS-certified. The 10K is open from age 16, and the half marathon and longer races from age 18. Registration is open on the official website. The organisers will share cut-off times before race day, so check them when they are published.

Good for: runners who can already cover 5K comfortably and want a 12-week target in cool January weather.

2. MG Vadodara Marathon 2027

📅 Sun, 7 February 2027 · 📍 Vadodara, Gujarat · 🏃 Full Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K, 5K Timed Run, Heritage Fun Run, Divyang Paralympic Run

The 14th edition, on a route the organisers say is AIMS-certified. With categories from a fun run to a full marathon, it works well for families and running groups where everyone is at a different level. Registrations are open, and the official website lists fees in its price chart.

Good for: true beginners who want the extra weeks, and groups who want to race together across different distances.

Nobody feels ready for their first half marathon. You become ready by booking the race and showing up for the training, one easy run at a time. Pick your date this week, and let the calendar do the convincing.

A simple 12-week shape

This is a general outline, not a personal plan. If you have any health condition, or you are planning a big jump in activity, check with your doctor first.

Weeks 1 to 4: build the habit. Three or four short, easy runs a week, at a pace where you can still talk. Walk breaks are fine. One run each weekend becomes your "long run".

Weeks 5 to 8: build the distance. Keep most runs easy. Add a little to the weekend long run each week, and take an easier week every third or fourth week so your body can catch up.

Weeks 9 to 11: get race-ready. Your longest run should reach somewhere in the mid-to-high teens of kilometres. Practise race morning: wake-up time, breakfast, shoes, and drinking water on the move.

Week 12: rest up. Run less, sleep more, and arrive at the start line fresh rather than tired.

Two rules matter more than any plan: increase slowly, and don't run through sharp pain. Missing one run is fine. Getting injured costs you weeks.

Before you book

Check the category rules. Age limits, cut-off times and any certificate requirements are set by each organiser and can change.

Book travel early. January and February are peak race season. Hotels near the start fill quickly.

Keep your result. Download your timing certificate after the race. It is the proof many bigger events ask for next season.

Confirm on the official website. Always confirm the date, categories and cut-off times on the event's own website before you pay or travel.
