Destination Races in India: 4 Trips to Plan Now

The best races in India are not always in your own city. Some of the most memorable finish lines sit on a beach in Goa, among the red-earth roads of Auroville, or out on the white salt of the Rann of Kutch. A destination race turns months of training into a trip you will talk about for years.

Here are four destination events between October 2026 and March 2027, for runners and cyclists at very different levels. Every date and distance below comes from the organiser's own website. One of them opens general registration on 1 October, so read on before you plan your weekends.

Why travel for a race?

A race away from home changes how you train. You have a fixed date, a booked ticket and a reason to get out of bed on cold mornings. It also changes how you race: new roads, new weather and new people around you make the day feel bigger than a local run.

The catch is planning. Travel, stay and bib collection all need to fit around the race, so the earlier you decide, the easier and cheaper it gets.

Four trips worth planning

1. Kochi Spice Coast Marathon

📅 Sun, 25 October 2026 · 📍 Kochi, Kerala · 🏃 Full Marathon, Half Marathon, 5K Fun Run

The nearest date on this list, and a good way to see Kochi's coastline and old-town streets on foot. With a 5K alongside the full and half marathon, it also works for a group trip where not everyone is chasing the same distance. Registration is open on the organiser's website.

Good for: runners who are already in shape and want an October race by the sea.

2. The Deccan Cliffhanger

📅 Starts Sat, 28 November 2026 · 📍 Pune to Goa · 🚴 643 km, solo or relay

An ultra-cycling race from Pune, across the Western Ghats, to a finish at Bogmallo Beach in Goa. Riders can go solo (self-supported or with a crew) or share the distance in a relay team of two to four. Cut-offs depend on the category; for example, the organiser lists 37 hours for self-supported men aged 18 to 49. Early Bird entries have ended and general registration opens on 1 October.

Good for: experienced long-distance cyclists, or a group of friends who want to try ultra-cycling as a relay team.

3. Auroville Marathon

📅 Sun, 14 February 2027 (bib collection 13 Feb) · 📍 Auroville, near Puducherry · 🏃 Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K

The course runs through Auroville itself, on quiet roads and shaded paths. It is a calm, community-style race, and Puducherry is close enough to turn it into a long weekend. The organisers say registration will start soon, so keep an eye on their website.

Good for: first-time half marathoners with a winter to train, and anyone who prefers a relaxed race to a big-city crowd.

4. White Sand Ultra

📅 27 to 28 March 2027 · 📍 Dholavira, Kutch, Gujarat · 🏃 50K, 100K, 100 miles, 135 miles

An out-and-back ultra on asphalt and salt flats in the Rann of Kutch, with aid stations every 7 km. Cut-offs range from 8 hours for the 50K to 38 hours for the 135-mile category. Registration is open on the organiser's website. This is a serious event: heat, distance and open terrain all add up.

Good for: marathoners ready for their first ultra (the 50K), and experienced ultra runners looking for a desert challenge.

A destination race gives your training a date, a place and a story. You remember the start line in a new town, the strangers who cheered for you and the road that brought you there. Pick one trip this season and let it pull you through every early morning.

How to plan a race trip

Register first, then book travel. Popular categories fill up. Once your bib is confirmed, book trains, flights and stays around bib collection day, not just race day.

Arrive a day early. Most events hand out bibs the day before. Arriving early also gives you time to rest after the journey and check the start area.

Train for the conditions. Coastal races can be humid, the Ghats bring long climbs, and Kutch can be hot and exposed. Build some of your training around what the course will throw at you.

Match the event to your level. Give yourself at least 10 to 12 weeks to move up to a half marathon, and much longer for an ultra or a 643 km ride. If you are planning a big jump in training, check with your doctor first.

Whatever you choose, always confirm dates, categories, cut-offs and entry rules on the official event website before you book. Organisers do sometimes change schedules.

Which trip is right for you?

Want a race soon? Kochi in October.

Love the bike? The Deccan Cliffhanger, solo or with a relay team.

Building up over winter? Auroville in February.

Ready for something extreme? The White Sand Ultra in March.
